8 Steps to Making Gymnastics Safe for Gymnasts

Filed under: Sport On — admin @ 12:31 pm

Be Prepared to Practice

As with any other physical activity, injuries occur much more often when you are tired and/or worn down. Make sure you get sufficient sleep the night before your classes or practices. If you did not get enough sleep, rest and take a nap before class or practice. Make sure your body has enough energy from nutrition to last through your class or practice.

Build Your Strength to Increase Your Safety Margin

The stronger and more flexible you are, the less likely you are to get hurt and the more likely you are to learn gymnastics skills quickly and safely. Flexibility not only makes many skills more beautiful to watch (like back walkovers), but also can make you less prone to injury. So prepare for your gymnastics career first by working to make yourself strong and flexible.

Make Sure You Understand What to Do

Tell your coach if you don’t completely understand instructions on what to do. You should know and understand exactly what skill your teacher expects you to do and how they want you to do it. If you are not sure, ask! Understanding will also help you learn more quickly and do skills more safely.

Follow Proper Skill Progressions and Master Skills

It is extremely important to learn gymnastics skills in the proper order of difficulty. Gymnasts should not be attempting difficult skills without learning all the lead-up skills and doing any appropriate lead-up drills. Gymnastics is a series of habits built upon other habits. Moving along too quickly without mastering skills can ultimately interfere with learning higher level gymnastics skills.

Follow Proper Equipment Progressions

It is only common sense to work on gymnastics apparatus in their naturally progressive order. Beam skills are first learned and mastered on the floor (on a line). Then gymnasts can move up to low, medium and high beams.

The More Mats the Safer

Make sure there are enough mats under and around the equipment you are working on. The harder the skill you are doing the more mats it is wise to have in potential landing and fall areas. Don’t be shy about gong to get some more mats if some area is not sufficiently and safely matted.

Tell Your Coach If You are Injured or Get Hurt

Let your coach decide if you need medical attention, ice, a band aid, or if you can and should continue to work out if you get injured. Don’t keep injuries to yourself.

Be Safe, Not Sorry!

Follow all gym rules and the above steps for a safe and happy gymnastics career.

November NFL Thoughts

Filed under: Sport On — admin @ 8:28 pm

Picked up pieces from the sports betting weekend. A pro handicapper told me about an old betting angle started back in the 1970s which relates to the mid-point of the NFL season. According to him, people bet on any team that starts the season 2-6 or worse for the rest of the year, and against any team that starts 6-2 or better. This is not a formula for hitting 80% winners the rest of the way, but for sports betting grinders. I don’t do that, but I can see reasoning behind the angle. You’re going against public perception which means, in theory, you’re getting a few extra points each week, as teams that that 2-6 are likely to be big dogs the rest of the way, while currently strong teams like the Colts and Broncos will be getting respect from oddsmakers. Just thought I’d pass that wagering angle along.

The Terrell Owens saga is ridiculous. A pampered, problem-child superstar continues to backstab teammates and talk about ME, ME, ME, so the coach throws him off the team. A pat on the back for Andy Reid for making that decision. Football is not about ME, it’s about teamwork, working hard and working together. Owens was suspended for Sunday night’s 17-10 loss at Washington, and will remain suspended for three more games without pay. After that, the Eagles plan to deactivate him for the rest of the season. Does anyone recall the TV speech Owens gave early in preseason, trying to explain his actions? It was embarrassing. Let’s hope Owens and his agent aren’t dumb enough to go on TV again to try and plead his case.

Athletes wear out their welcome all the time in sports, and most move on to another team for a few years where they often wear out their welcome again. Lost in the shuffle of the Owens’ saga is a similar thing that happened in the NFL four years ago. Early in the 2001 season, Patriots All-Pro WR Terry Glenn was being a problem child, missing practices and complaining about a variety of topics. Coach Bill Belichick laid down the law and suspended Glenn. At the time it was a surprise, as New England was short on offensive speed. However, the team showed they were better without Glenn, recovering from an 0-2 start and the sideshow antics by winning the Super Bowl, all without Glenn.

In Cleveland, first-year coach Romeo Crennel has the Browns playing hard. A defensive expert, the Cleveland defense is allowing 17 ppg after allowing 24 per game last season. The offense is still short on talent and plays a conservative, grind-it-out style. Notice that the Browns are 7-1 “under” the total.

The 3-5 Raiders have had a tough schedule and some bitter defeats, losing at home to KC by 6 when a late drive stalled, and at Philly by 3. Sunday’s shocking 27-23 loss at Kansas City on the final play was easily the hardest to take. “This is about as bitter a defeat as you could have,” said Oakland quarterback Kerry Collins afterward. It’s the type of loss that could break the back of a team. Watch for any finger-pointing or complaining by Oakland players over the next few weeks, especially Randy Moss, who hasn’t spoken to the press since early September, which is probably a blessing.

Wicket Keeping Success Tips

Filed under: Sport On — admin @ 12:17 pm

The wicket keeper is an essential and key part of the cricket team. Every team needs a reliable wicket keeper. As well as taking catches, stumping the batsmen and taking run outs, the wicket keeper is one of the team’s most important players: motivating and inspiring the bowlers and fielders to raise their game and WIN.

To be a wicket keeper you need fast reactions and precise judgement as you have very little time to react to such things as fast deliveries especially if there are changes and deviations in the balls line due to variations in swing, movement off the pitch and edges.

You need to be alert and have high levels of concentration. Like a top batsmen you want to be able to ’switch on and off’ your concentration between deliveries and overs to avoid getting mentally tired, as it’s impossible to fully concentrate non-stop for hours at a time. High levels of fitness and flexibility are also very important for a wicket keeper as it can be very tiring because you are effectively doing hundreds of squats and diving around the field. So stay fit, warm up and down and stretch thoroughly to remain in peak condition and avoid injury.

Equipment for wicket keeping

-Wicket keeping gloves (and inner gloves),
-Box,
-Wicket keeping pads,
-Helmet.

Basic technique: Wicket keeping stance

You can stand up to spin bowlers and slower paced bowlers. The wicket keepers stance is quite straight forward, you need to stand about one step behind the stumps, making sure no part of your body or equipment is in front of the line of the stumps.

Crouch down with your left foot (reverse for left hand batsmen) inline with middle stump, therefore on you are crouched a little on off side. Try to keep your head still and eyes level during the delivery to help you judge the pace and line. You should be balanced and relaxed with your weight slightly forward on the balls of your feet. Be alert and ready to react to the delivery.

Catching the ball

When you are catching the ball, aim to get your head/eyes above the line of the ball and your body behind the line of the ball. As the ball rises from the pitch, rise from the crouching position with the ball, so you mirror the height of the ball. Watch the ball into your hands and catch it with your fingers pointing downwards. You’ll need to cushion the impact of the ball hitting your gloves when catching by ‘giving’ with your hands. If the ball continues to rise as it reaches you, step with your outside foot backwards and across, rotating your body outwards, taking the ball on one side of the body.
To catch a ball delivered on the off side or leg side, move your feet and body across immediately to get your head back into line with the delivery. (Move the outside foot first and follow with the inside.) Rise with the ball as discussed above and ‘give’ with hands to reduce the impact.

If you are standing back which you should be to medium and fast bowlers take your stance as discussed above, however stand in a position so that the ball is taken once it begins to drop.

Sometimes you may have to dive to take wide deliveries or thick edges, always try to take the ball in two hands if possible, roll after the dive if you can to reduce the impact of landing and changes of injury.

Stumping

You can attempt a stumping if the batsman is out of the crease after you have caught the delivery. Once you’ve taken the ball move your body weight towards stumps and move hands fast to break the wickets.

Sorenstam Is Ranked No. 1 in Women’s Golf

Filed under: Sport On — admin @ 7:19 pm

No one doubted Annika Sorenstam was the No. 1 player in women’s
golf. Now it’s official. The Women’s World Golf Ranking finally
made its debut Tuesday morning with Sorenstam far atop the list
based on her 21 victories worldwide and three major
championships over the last two years.

Such is her dominance that Sorenstam’s lead was nearly double
that of Paula Creamer at No. 2.

The only surprise was Michelle Wie.

The 16-year-old from Hawaii, who turned pro in October, checked
in at No. 3 and could move ahead of Creamer depending on what
happens in the Fields Open in Hawaii this week on the LPGA Tour.

The women’s ranking, sponsored by Rolex, will be published every
Tuesday and used as criteria for getting into tournaments such
as the LPGA Championship, the Women’s British Open and the HSBC
Women’s World Match Play.

“The Rolex Rankings make nationality, tour membership and
amateur or professional status virtually invisible, providing a
definitive answer to the question, ‘Who are the best women
golfers in the world?’” LPGA Tour commissioner Carolyn Bivens
said.

The system is similar to the men’s ranking. It measures
performance over two years, with emphasis placed on the most
recent 13-week period. Points are assigned based on the strength
of field, then divided by the number of tournaments played.

But there are two major differences.

Professionals and amateurs can appear in the women’s world
ranking because anyone can earn points by competing in official
events on the LPGA, European, Japan, Korean and Australian
women’s tours, along with the developmental Futures Tour in the
United States.

And while the men have a minimum divisor of 40 tournaments over
two years, the women’s divisor is only 15.

That explains why Wie, who plays sparingly while attending high
school in Honolulu, started out ranked so high.

She has played 15 events on the LPGA since 2004 with six top-10
finishes — three in majors. She was fourth in the Kraft Nabisco
Championship in ‘04, and last year was second at the LPGA
Championship and tied for third in the Women’s British Open.
Creamer, meanwhile, won four times worldwide as an LPGA Tour
rookie last year. But she has played 35 times in the last two
years as a pro and an amateur, so her point average comes out to
9.65. Wie was at 9.24. Read more here…
