A Few Home Remodeling Rules

Filed under: Best Home Improvement — admin @ 1:19 am

When you begin to think about remodeling your home, it’s easy to go overboard, tackle too much, or overspend. However, if you follow a few basic home remodeling rules, you can avoid those difficulties. Here are some things to think about–even before you begin your remodeling project.

First, allow for the project to cost more than you originally thought it would. Regardless of which room you decide to remodel, you will typically find your ultimate cost to be about 25 percent higher than your original estimate. The same 25 percent figure also applies to the amount of time it will take to complete the project.

For example, if you have decided to spend $10,000 to remodel your kitchen and give yourself five weeks to finish the job, you can generally expect to end up spending about $12,500 and seven weeks on the project. There are no hard-and-fast rules, but one thing experienced remodeling professionals have learned–always expect the unexpected.

Next, take your measurements carefully, and do lots of research concerning the types of things that are available on the market to help you accomplish your remodeling goal. Go to your home improvement store and get test paint color samples. You can generally also obtain test samples of flooring materials such as carpet or hardwood flooring. Don’t be afraid to ask your retailer for samples. They expect it, and are generally happy to supply them. They want you to be happy–and you don’t want to make an expensive mistake by choosing the wrong materials. Ask your home improvement professionals for their input, as well. They will normally be aware of the latest developments in whatever field of remodeling you’re going to tackle. Again, that’s their job, and they will be happy to help.

Third, once you’ve decided on your main components, don’t forget to spend time on the small things, as well. It’s easy to get caught up in deciding upon big ticket items, but it’s often the interior design details, like trim, accent colors, and hardware that really make a remodeling project come to life.

Fourth, don’t be too hard on yourself. Remember, remodeling is a sort of organic process, in which you’re going to make mistakes, you’re going to change your mind and do things somewhat differently than you had originally planned, and you’re going to run into things that you hadn’t anticipated. That’s all part of the remodeling game, so just roll with it.

Finally, try to use the best quality of materials you can afford. If you’re planning to be in your home for awhile, you’re going to be living with the materials and hardware you use in your remodel, so you want them to be as nice as you can. It’s not worth it to sacrifice your future enjoyment of the materials by skimping on quality during the remodeling job. Cheaper products also generally have a shorter lifespan, so they may actually end up costing more in the long run, once you have to replace them again.

Overall, remodeling can be a rewarding experience, if you just follow a few simple rules and use common sense along the way.

Bar Stools - Ideal For Entertainment And Relaxation!

Filed under: Best Home Improvement — admin @ 6:53 am

Bar stools are very popular items of furniture, which not only enhance the appearance of a room, but provide versatile seating for all types of occasions. Modern bar stools come in a huge variety of designs, to suit rooms of any theme and some are even made for outdoor use. From traditional wooden counter stools for rustic country kitchens, to contemporary metal bar stools complete with swivel seats, ideal for a home bar or games room, there’s a barstool design to suit all tastes.

If you like to entertain, bar stools are perfect for relaxing in whilst enjoying a sociable drink with friends. You can take your pick from various different styles, including simple backless designs with solid or cushioned seats, and those with armrests and seatbacks. Upholstered barstools can be covered with hardwearing fabric in your choice of colors and patterns, to compliment your existing d©cor and other furniture. Vinyl and leather bar stools are other popular options to consider.

Alternatively, you may prefer to buy stools with detachable cushions that tie-on to the seatbacks. This gives you the advantage of being able to change the covers for cleaning or if you fancy a change of look, and can be useful if your stools get lots of use.

When deciding which bar stools to buy, remember to take accurate measurements of the space available, to ensure a comfortable fit. Bar stools should be just the right height, so they are comfortable to sit in, with adequate legroom, but close enough to the counter top for convenience. As a rough guide, aim for a gap of around 9 or 10 inches between the seat and the counter. Think about the positioning of your bar stools and leave enough space between each one for people to be able to move freely. Commercial style swivel bar stools can work well in home settings too, and are great for saving space.

Online stores are excellent places to browse a huge range of different bar stools and compare prices, making it easier for you to find the perfect bar stools to transform your home.

Quality Natural Stones in Interior Design

Filed under: Best Home Improvement — admin @ 5:50 am

Natural stones have been used by man throughout centuries primarily due to their beauty, variety and durability. Today as before their role in interior design cannot be overestimated.

Natural stones can contribute to traditional and contemporary interiors in many ways, from marble wall or floor tiles to limestone windowsills, let alone worktops in the kitchen or bath surrounds and vanity tops in the bathroom. Natural stones also go well with other interior design materials, such as wood or glass.

Even a small piece of quality stonework can make a lot of difference. My favourite examples of stonework for the sitting room are hearths, windowsills and table tops. For the more adventurous, a multi-stone floor inset would easily be the centerpiece of any room. However, nothing beats marble tiled floors, better still if accompanied by skirting made of the same natural stone.

The key principle is to use quality natural stones with top aesthetical and technical characteristics. Quality of the natural stones is driven by a number of factors, the state of the quarry, quality of the block, quality of the machinery and stone grading process at the cutting factory, commitment to quality of the stone supplier who chooses the quarry/factory/stone. You should ask your stone supplier for advice on different grades of a particular natural stone before you make a decision based on quality and budget constraints. Based on my experience, quality should never be compromised.

Fire surround is a good example. In most cases, quality of the natural stone and craftwork play a bigger role that the design itself. There is only one step from a luxurious piece to a tacky one. My favourite natural stones for luxury fire surrounds include Statuario marble, White Cappuccino limestone and Rosso Lepante marble. Fire surrounds are made either of slabs or blocks. Most contemporary and some traditional designs can be made of slabs. Generally, a piece made of slabs costs less than one made of a block.

I always use an opportunity to mention marble windowsills. In Sweden, windowsills made of natural stones are as common as snow in the winter. The reasons for that are twofold, decorative effect and practicality (they are hygienic and easy to maintain). I believe that many interior design projects would benefit from the use of marble (or other natural stone) windowsills.

I strongly believe that the use of quality natural stones in interior design is an investment that pays off.

Laminate Countertops are the Economical Choice

Filed under: Best Home Improvement, Shopping Online, Style of Life — admin @ 3:22 pm

If you are looking for a cheaper solution for your kitchen counter top then your best alternative after plastic counter tops is the laminate countertops. Laminate kitchen countertops is the new revolution in kitchen technology as laminate is a synthetic material that is constructed from all kinds of different materials including Kraft paper. All of these materials are resin treated and they are pressed together as they become treated to become one single material. Because laminate is totally synthetic in origin, it is usually a very cheap and affordable material for most kitchens.

Thus if you are looking for an economical solution for your kitchen counter top then you should definitely choose a laminate countertop. These countertops come in variety of colors so they can easily suit all kinds of kitchens without any problems. However the main disadvantages that you may face with laminate counter tops is the fact that you will have problems with laminate getting scratched and worn down over time. Also laminate is not a material that is resistant to high heat, so you will need to take care not to put any hot objects as they can scour the finish on your laminate counter top. In case laminate gets damaged, it is hard to repair and you will need to replace it completely.

Air Purifier Systems

Filed under: Best Home Improvement, Hall Of Health, Med — admin @ 11:25 am

Air filtration systems clean dirty air by moving it through a filter. Closely-woven strands in the filter trap the particles and keep them from circulating in the air. High Efficiency Particulate Air filters (HEPA air purifiers) are the best, screening out 99.97 percent of particles of 0.3 microns or larger–roughly 1/20th the width of a human hair. Be aware that some less efficient filters are sold as “HEPA type” but they do not carry a certification number required on true HEPA filters. The benefit of filter-type air cleaners is that they permanently remove harmful particles. Consumer reports for home air purifiers tend to favor filtration systems over other air cleaners. The down side is that you need to replace the filters every few months. HEPA filters, while extremely effective against dust, pollen and mold spores, don’t fight smoke or odors. Two technologies that combat smoke, odors and some chemical pollutants are ozone and activated charcoal. Ozone is a molecule that quickly breaks apart chemical compounds found in the air. It is highly effective at removing odors. The downside to ozone is that it can be harmful in large amounts, meaning that ozone-producing purifiers should be kept at their lowest settings.Charcoal filters absorb many odors and chemical compounds. They are too porous to be effective against dust particles but they are often used alongside HEPA filters with good results. Many air cleaners offer a combination of technologies to make air as pure as possible. Some ionizing purifiers combine air filters for an extra level of purification. Germicidal systems use ultraviolet technology to kill bacteria and mold spores. Other cleaners add humidifier capabilities to keep rooms at optimum humidity levels. A room with thirty percent humidity will have fewer suspended particles in the air. All together, these systems offer a great way to clean up indoor air.

Home Improvement Loans

Filed under: Best Home Improvement — admin @ 2:40 pm

Entering into any loan agreement is a hard decision to make
especially if it is a secured loan! You have to make sure that
you can afford the repayments and not fall behind or your house
is in jeopardy. Home improvement loans are very common as people
are always wanting to better where they live. They can be used
for installing a new heating system, a drive way or a fitted
bathroom, kitchen or bedroom!

Many people who are after a home improvement loan go through a
broker to get in touch with the best possible deals and loan
providers. Brokers search all the available loan companies to
see who would give you the best deal for the amount of money you
would like to borrow. Obviously the loan company with the lowest
APR is the best choice!

Home improvement loans can be used for just about anything
whether they are used for fitting extensions on the side of your
house or if you simply like to replace the old heating system.
Many loan companies do ask what type of home improvement you are
making so they know whether you are over borrowing or not. Most
loans are secured on your house and are called secured loans;
unsecured loans are for people with squeaky clean credit scores.

With at least 60% of people in at least $10,000 worth of debt
loans are closely monitored, all your transactions with
financial companies such as credit cards, loans and mortgages
are recorded on your credit file. Companies can then look over
these files and see if there are any defaults or non payment
terms listed and from the information that they gather from your
credit file they then decide whether it is a safe option to
provide you with a loan. Many people suffer from bad credit due
to unfortunate events in their past, but loan companies are now
offering these types of consumer loans but with much higher
rates of interest.

When considering a loan the most important thing you can do is
make sure that you can afford the repayments or you could lose
your home and everything in it! Taking on a loan is a serious
decision and all parties involved need to agree. Once the ball
is in motion all you have to do is sign the dotted line and wait
for the check to come through and get that beautiful kitchen,
bedroom or bathroom that you have always wanted!

Metal Carports: Steel Carport Guide

Filed under: Best Home Improvement — admin @ 12:19 pm

Buying a carport to protect your investment can be a very frustrating task. With hundreds of manufacturers claiming to have the best product, how do you know who to trust? First you must ask yourself, are they out to make a buck, or to protect my truck? The first line of defense is to know what makes a good carport and the second is to trust your first instinct and know that you are protecting your mobile investments.

I you are like me, when you first started looking for a shelter for your vehicle(s), you knew exactly what you wanted but didn’t really know why. The first line of defense is knowledge and that only comes from learning. So let us start from the beginning. Have you ever quietly wondered to yourself what galvanized is? Questions like this are difficult because they are hard enough to not know, but easy enough to feel embarrassed to ask.

Basically, galvanized steel carports will have a zinc coating which prevents the carport frame from the various corrosive elements, such as water and salt, from coming into contact with the steel of the carport. This will in turn generally eliminate the possibility of rust. So as you can see this is a very important feature but is defiantly not the end all solution that should make you feel comfortable with handing over a blank check to the next dealer you see. Another important feature your carport will boast about is its gauge, which is the thickness of the steel that protects your valuable(s). As you might have guessed, a thicker gauge offers your prized possessions more protection from various natural hazards ranging from falling limbs or snow. What ever gauge you choose make sure that “good weather” doesn’t stop you from considering a good carport. Keeping that new SUV out of the sun will not only make that paint last longer, but will keep your legs from simi-permanently melding to that leather that you will happily pay for the next few generations to come.

Overall, I defiantly recommend steel carports over wood or plastic. Not only will you get more life out of them, but they are in most cases cheaper as well. As far as looks and frame strength are concerned you will defiantly get what you pay for. Some of the more “affordable” models will take sort cuts to cut costs so be sure that you will be happy with your investment before taking the plunge. I usually recommend carports that use one piece construction for the bow pieces which support the roof. This is a nice feature that adds strength and increases the overall appearance of the carport. I also recommend that you look for a full radius turn instead of 2 sharp turns on the bow supports. Ask your dealer for more information and they should be able to assist you with any other technical decisions.

Last but not least, you may also want to talk to your insurance agent and let them know about your new metal carport as it just may reduce your premiums for your car(s) as they will be very much more shielded from the nasty effects that nature can cough up.

Thank you for your time and have a great day!

Kitchen Design - Understanding the Work Triangle and Kitchen Layouts

Filed under: Best Home Improvement — admin @ 7:48 am

Having a good layout for your kitchen is important, because the
kitchen should be an efficient and pleasant area in which to
prepare meals and do related tasks. Understanding the kitchen
work triangle concept and the basic kitchen layouts is a
valuable starting point for having a good kitchen design that
you like.

The kitchen work triangle consists of the distance between the
sink, refrigerator and range or cooktop. Each one of these areas
becomes a focal point in the kitchen and forms the three points
of a triangle with different distances between them. Done
correctly, the kitchen work triangle provides the most efficient
food preparation area layout in the kitchen.

Whether you’re remodeling an existing kitchen or building a new
one, an efficient design means that your work triangle minimizes
the number of steps the cook must take between the three areas
during meal preparation and cleanup. The total distance from the
sink to the stove to the refrigerator and back to the sink
should be not less than 12 feet total nor more than 27 feet.
Each triangle leg should measure between 4 and 9 feet in length.
The kitchen isles should be at least 42 to 48 inches wide to
allow people to move around easily and for appliances to be
opened with ease.

When selecting the floor plan for your kitchen, here are basic
kitchen layouts to consider:

* L-Shaped Kitchen - this is the most popular kitchen design. It
consists of a long leg and a shorter one and this type of design
can be used in small and large kitchens. The L-shaped kitchen
gives you the possibility of having a center island depending on
the space available. In general, this design will have 2 or 3
appliances on one wall. The usual arrangement is to have the
refrigerator at one end, the range or cooktop at the other end
with the sink located in the middle. This shape of kitchen
generally provides good traffic flow.

* Double L-Shaped Kitchen - this kitchen design has a lot of
cabinet space and plenty of counter space. This design is used
in large kitchens with two cooks, and it has two or more
entering areas, which can cause traffic flow problems. To avoid
some of these problems, create two separate working areas on
each L of the kitchen so that workflow does not get interrupted
by human traffic. * U-Shaped Kitchen - this kitchen design shape
has three walls instead of two, and the sink usually is located
in the middle wall section. The refrigerator and range or
cooktop are usually on the side walls opposite each other. The
U-shaped kitchen design gives room for ample countertop space,
and you have three walls for cabinets and appliances. This
kitchen layout tends to create a working triangle that is very
efficient.

The only problem with this type of kitchen design is that
sometimes the two U corners are not used appropriately. Make
sure you buy the appropriate storage items for the corner
cabinets created by the U shape design. The U shape design can
also create dark kitchens because of the shape and the amount of
cabinets. Using skylights, large windows, lots of under-cabinet
task lighting and light colors will help keep the kitchen bright
with sufficient light to see what you’re doing.

* G-Shaped Kitchen - this type of kitchen shape is becoming very
popular, and it gives you a fourth wall to use. The G-shape can
be used if you have more than one cook in the house. This fourth
wall section can be used for a counter, island and storage
space.

With this kitchen layout you can have two sinks, perhaps two
cooktops or two ranges. You could have two working triangles –
one for sink, cook top or range and refrigerator and a second
working triangle with another sink, built-in grill and cooktop.
It allows two cooks to do different things at the same time and
entertain large groups of people.

* Single-Wall Kitchen - if you do not have much space, you may
only be able to have an I-shaped kitchen. No problem. Just be
sure the sink is placed between the refrigerator and the stove.
Locate the refrigerator so that the refrigerator door opens away
from the kitchen sink. This is a very common arrangement for
small kitchens in narrow spaces.

* Galley-Shaped Kitchen - this type of kitchen design is more
common in apartments or in homes where space is limited — it is
often called the corridor style. The kitchen cabinets and the
appliances can be located on opposite walls for better work flow
– place the range or cooktop on one side of the kitchen along
one wall and the refrigerator and sink on the opposite wall.

To eliminate traffic issues in this type of kitchen design, one
entry is often closed off. This type of layout should only be
used by one cook. If you want to maintain both exits, place the
refrigerator near the end of the galley kitchen for easy access
– this way, your family and friends can reach the refrigerator
without interfering with the person who is cooking.

If you need extra storage in the galley kitchen, install tall
kitchen cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling. Wall
storage is crucial — buy a stepladder to use when you need to
reach the upper shelf of the cabinets, and place the items you
use less frequently on the upper shelves.

By understanding the kitchen work triangle concept and how you
want your kitchen to function, you’ll be more likely to create
the kind of kitchen you’ve always wanted. Today, kitchens are
often viewed as the hub of the home as well as a social center
for family and friends. Planning your kitchen can be a
challenge, but the rewards you’ll receive are very much worth
the time and effort.
